In 2022, the company began to develop a new business unit called Data Science Talent, to search for the best data scientists to carry out its projects or support its clients. In this note we know what are the characteristics that these professionals must have.
“Data scientists are a new breed of data analytics experts who possess the technical skills to solve complex problems – and the curiosity to explore what problems need to be solved,” explains the transnational analytics software and solutions company SAS.
“There are various disciplines dedicated to the study and good use of data, such as advanced analytics, predictive, prescriptive, cognitive analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, business intelligence, and others. The umbrella that groups them all is called data science or data science. The professional who is dedicated to this is called a data scientist or data scientist”, indicates Luis Sepúlveda, founder of Alaya. “Under data science is everything I mentioned and more,” he adds.
The founder of Alaya points out that professionals who work in this discipline must be experts in technology, mathematics and statistics, and in the business for which a solution is being sought.
In Chile there are still no graduates in data science, since the universities that teach the degree began a few years ago. Several study houses also offer a master's degree in Data Science. At this time there are other professionals who have specialized in this field, such as computer scientists, computer engineers and computer engineers -who are closer to technology-; graduates in mathematics, graduates in statistics, mathematical engineers and statistical engineers -approximate to mathematics-; industrial engineers, process engineers and other engineers from different disciplines - who know the business.
Data Science Talent (DST)
During this year Alaya created the Data Science Talent business unit, where using its experience in analytics, data and business knowledge, it makes data scientists or groups of specialists (cells) available to companies that they need to develop their specific projects.
What Alaya looks for in a data scientist
“What we are looking for in a data scientist is someone who is as complete as possible,” Sepúlveda clarifies. “You have to know details of the business processes that we are going to address in the project, that you have technical skills such as programming very well in Python, that you know about the Microsoft -Azure-, Amazon -AWS- and Google -GCP- clouds” and that possesses solid knowledge of mathematics and statistics.
As for soft skills, they must be empathetic, proactive people, capable of understanding customer problems and providing them with solutions, as well as representing the company's values (flexibility, agility, innovation, collaboration and integration).
“This is not just programming or developing software. We offer different solutions and for this reason we want data scientists to know the process of how to reach understanding, knowledge, and the value proposition”, adds the founder of Alaya.
cells
Each of Alaya's projects is developed by multidisciplinary teams or work cells, which, in addition to being made up of data scientists, include data engineers, data architects, full stack development engineers, among others, depending on the challenges of each assignment. .
On the other hand, "when there are companies that do not have the capacity to hire a team, through Data Science Talent, using our expertise, we search for the professionals they will need to tackle the task," adds Luis Sepúlveda.
